GPPO Connector and its significance

GPPO connector is a high-performance, sub-miniature, push-on microwave interconnect system. It was developed in response to industry demand for increased package density, lower weight, and higher frequency performance.

  1. For increased package density, 0.135" center-to-center spacing is available.

2. The GPPO blindmate interconnect, Part No. B1B1–0001–01 is only 0.09 grams in weight.

3. DC to 65 GHz RF Performance

4. Designed to compensate for both radial and axial misalignment with minimal VSWR change.

5. SMA, 2.4mm, and 1.85mm adapters are available.

Corning Gilbert’s B014-D11–01 is a GPPO Female Straight to S/R cable connector. This GPPO Female will take a 0.086 “cable and can operate at frequencies up to 50 GHz. The connector has a diameter of.091 inches “All Corning Gilbert GPPO cable connectors are gold-plated Beryllium Copper with gold-plated Beryllium Copper center contacts.

SMA connectors female are miniature push-on connectors first marketed in the 1980s by the Gilbert company (now Corning Gilbert) under the trade name GPO, which stands for “Gilbert push-on.” Following versions of the connector include GPPO, G3PO, and G4PO, all of which is Corning trademarks. Other connector manufacturers offer compatible versions of these connectors under the generic “SMP” terminology or trade names.

· The SMP-style push-on connector interface consists of an inner female-to-female component known as a bullet or blind mate and two outer panels, circuits, or cable-mounted receptacles known as shrouds.

· The entire system allows you to make connections without using any threads, so no tiny wrenches are required.

· The best part is that it allows for minor radial misalignment during mating, which would be unacceptable with threaded connectors.

For example, three such connections could be used between an antenna/feed/monopulse network and a Ka-band transceiver module (perhaps some readers are familiar with such a system!) However, no one should assume that this capability is “free.” You will almost certainly suffer insertion and mismatch losses of a few tenths of a dB, especially at millimeter-wave frequencies.

The acronym SMP is thought to stand for “sub-miniature push-on.” As a result, SMP-M (we believe) stands for “subminiature push-on, micro,” and SMPS (we think) stands for “subminiature push-on, sub-micro.”

The SMA connector is a screwing coupling semi-precision RF coaxial connector. The female connector comprises a threaded barrel with 36 threads per inch density. The male connector has a hex nut that fits snugly around the female barrel for a secure coupling. This coupling is reasonably safe and has excellent mechanical durability. Connectors comprise stainless steel or brass and have nickel or gold plating around the contacts.

SMA connectors have a 50 Ohm impedance and are used from DC to 18GHz. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) dielectric is used in both male and female connectors. The connectors have a 500-cycle coupling cycle that can only be achieved by coupling with the recommended torque.
